Managing IBS

Identifying and removing the triggers.

The low-FODMAP diet is the reference treatment: certain short-chain carbohydrates (onion, garlic, wheat, some dairy) that ferment quickly in the gut are temporarily limited, then reintroduced one by one with a dietitian.

More Informations

Managing IBS: acting on the plate, on stress and on the gut.

Definition

Because IBS is a functional disorder, its management combines several levers: diet, psychology and treatment of bowel spasms.

Causes

Flares are favoured by certain fermentable foods, stress and an unbalanced microbiome.

Diagnosis

  • Symptom tracking with the Bristol scale and a food diary.

Treatments

Peppermint oil for cramps, antispasmodics, low doses of tricyclic antidepressants for visceral pain, hypnotherapy and cognitive therapies. The gastroenterologist composes the appropriate programme.

Nateen advice

While treatment and dietary changes take effect, keep Flexi absorbent underwear for outings and a Mati underpad in bed: protection is not giving up, it is a safety net.

Educational content written for families and caregivers. It does not replace a consultation: a doctor, a continence nurse or a physiotherapist makes the diagnosis and chooses the treatment.
